Battle: Los Angeles

Nasa has signaled dozens of meteorites that soon will crash in the ocean, but all of a sudden they turn out to be space ships. Earth is under attack!

The film's story, so we’re told in various publications, was partly inspired by the so-called Battle of los Angeles, a rumored enemy attack that took place in Los Angeles during World War II, on the night of February 24, 1942 (which turned out to be a false alarm, caused by unidentified flying objects). This film is based on real-life rumors, so to speak.

Prior to Battle: Los Angeles, Jonathan Liebesman directed a few horror movies and it shows: the first half plays more or less like horror movie, and is actually not bad, a sort of cross between Black Hawk Down and Predator (but for a PG audience). There are even a few nice ideas, such as the inclusion of fake CNN broadcast with images of the attack and studio comments, and a poignant scene in which the marines find a wounded alien and start examining it in order to find out how these creatures can be killed. But then, somewhere halfway the movie, it becomes clear that Los Angeles has become humanity’s last stand. In other words: only Aaron Eckhart and his platoon can save the world. The second part of this picture is all heroism, self-sacrifice, awful dialogue and schmaltz.

Battle: Los Angeles (it has quite a few alternate titles) is good for a couple of unintentional laughs and there are more than enough explosions to keep your neighbours unhappy if you watch it in 5.1 super surround. The CGI were combined with live action and scale models (a life size alien was created for the occasion) and look quite convincing. Overall Battle: Los Angeles is good-looking, but after a good start it becomes too much a popcorn movie (and not even a good one) and it fizzles out long before the aliens decide to call it a day. It must be said that they provide the movie with a true jaw-dropping moment  by doing so: only when they give up the fight, we get to see their mother ship, the command center from which their remote-controlled drones were operated: it’s a hellova machine.
